'KALANGARAI', means 'Beacon of Light', that had its birth during the relief and rehabilitation work by the Jesuits of Madurai Province among the victims of Tsunami that struck various coastlines of Bay of Bengal and the Indian Ocean on 26th Dec. 2004, and Nagapattinum is one of the worst hit coastal cities of Tamil Nadu were Kalangarai is situated. The district of Nagapattinum has 116-mile coastline which was devastated by the cataclysmic event. Of the total number of 8,018 deaths in the state of Tamil Nadu, 6,065 were from Nagapattinam district.
Kalangarai, a non-profit organization was founded on the promise of realized rights for the widowed women and single women of India. The main objective of Kalankarai is to empower these women to become self-reliant. It aims at creating an equivalent society where there is no discrimination based on gender, caste, and creed. Our main office functions at Nagapattinam where the Tsunami wrecked the entire district turning women into widows, leaving children with single parent and families left behind with dark future at the friction of a few seconds.
